The New York Hall of Fame: 400 Years of Great New Yorkers
A lecture by Peter Eisenstadt
In 1900, New York University opened the "Hall of Fame of Great Americans" (now largely forgotten) in the Bronx. It has spawned numerous imitators, probably none more renowned than the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. But there is no Hall of Fame for great New Yorkers themselves.
This lecture explores the state's 400-year history via the biographies of New Yorkers who, over the centuries, have made positive contributions to the state, the nation, and the world. These men and women come from different backgrounds, eras, races, ethnicities -- such as Sir William Johnson, Aaron Burr, Frederick Douglass, Al Smith, Robert Moses, and Eleanor Roosevelt. The great New Yorkers featured in the lecture, which typically includes five biographies. can be selected to meet the interests of a particular audience.
This lecture is available from September 1, 2008 to January 1, 2012
Can be tailored to a high school audience
