Conservation Lessons Between New York State and Italy

A lecture by Paul M. Bray

While natural and cultural conservation efforts are typically seen as local endeavors, a fruitful discourse on conservation has flourished for more than a century and half between "old world" Italy and "new world" America. This presentation describes the traditions and lessons of conservation exchanges between Italy and America. Conservationists have discovered, for instance, that despite enormous differences in scale, New York's six-million-acre Adirondack Park shares a great deal in common with 100,000-acre Abruzzo Park in Italy. Both have villages and hamlets located within their boundaries, creating complex management challenges. Adirondack Park protects almost three million acres of wilderness-like forest preserve, while a sustainable population of fifty wolves live in the Abruzzo Park.

From the seminal, now-forgotten work of George Perkins Marsh, an American conservationist and ambassador to Italy from 1861-1882, to renewed collaborations since the 1990s, learn about the unique shared history of Italian and American conservation.
