The Hudson-Champlain Quadricentennial of 2009: Planning for World-class Commemorations

A lecture by Paul M. Bray

2009 marks the 400th anniversary of the explorations of Champlain and Hudson. As well, it's the 200th anniversary of Robert Fulton's journey from New York City to Albany on the steamship "Clermont," which established steam commerce on the Hudson River . Have New Yorkers risen to the challenge and realized the benefits that can come from putting on world-class commemorations of these occasions? Historian Kenneth Jackson has called New York the place, "where America began." Yet New York is known for its neglect of its significant history. This presentation will examine how New Yorkers are approaching the Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial, particularly in the context of the 1909 and 1959 commemorations, as well as significant commemorations in other cities. The discussion includes a look at signature events of the Quadricentennial, planning for legacy projects, the hurdles the State Quadricentennial Commission has faced, and a sampling of plans in progress by communities and organizations for 2009.

This lecture is available from March 1, 2007 to July 1, 2011
