Nazi Art Looting: Tales of Discovery

A lecture by Evie T. Joselow

The greatest theft of art in 20th century history was the theft carried out by Nazi Germany, beginning in 1933 and lasting until the end of World War II. Shrouded in secrecy, the Nazis launched a methodical and well-conceived campaign to confiscate and loot Europe of its most valuable art treasures. Prominent art historians, including museum directors and scholars, were called into service to identify and locate important works of art.

Scouring the walls of the most famous museums in Germany, France, and elsewhere, as well as the rooms and galleries of private collectors, the Nazis successfully carried out an art theft of major proportions. However, until the recent publication of scholarly works and numerous discoveries of stolen works of art, found hanging in museums across the globe, the facts about Nazi art looting have remained largely unknown. This lecture, accompanied by slides, unravels some of the hidden mysteries of Nazi art looting. Furthermore, it offers a unique perspective on the study and understanding of Nazi policies, ideas, and methods, by presenting personal family tales related to the looted art and inextricably linked to this tragic period in history.

This lecture is available from April 1, 2009 to July 1, 2012
