Reading Between the Lines

Re-examining George Washington

This series explores the life and impact of George Washington from a wide variety of perspectives. Each session centers on a book selected by Ryan Staude, a graduate student in the History Department of the University at Albany, SUNY

 

The series opens with a discussion of For King and Country, Thomas Lewis' treatment of Washington's youth in Virginia and its impact on his later career and attitudes.


 

This session focuses on General George Washington: A Military Life by Edward G. Lengel, which gives a comprehensive overview of his military career and wartime leadership.


 

A discussion of James MacGregor Burns and Susan Dunn's George Washington: President of the United States, 1789-1797 , which offers an in-depth exploration of Washington's years as president.


 

The series concludes with a conversation about An Imperfect God: George Washington, His Slaves, and the Creation of America, Henry Wiencek's groundbreaking treatment of Washington as a slave owner who ultimately decided to emancipate his slaves.
