Apply to Host a Family Reading & Discussion Program

Thank you for your interest in hosting a Family Reading & Discussion Program!
Before you begin the application:
Find a humanities scholar to serve as co-facilitator for all sessions.
You will need to attach his/her resume to the application. Scholars who have not facilitated a Together or Unidos program in the past are also encouraged to write a letter of commitment acknowledging their willingness to co-facilitate the program.

Designate a meeting space in your library.
Identify a theme or themes for your program.

Develop a book list using the Syllabus Form.
Your syllabus should include at least four books that you plan to discuss in your Family R&D Program. Each book on your syllabus should address the theme or themes of your program, and all should be at a reading level appropriate for 9- to 11-year-olds. You may also use books from the Council's Themed Book Lists. For more information, please read Are there criteria for selecting the books? in Common Questions.
Prepare a budget for your program using the Budget Form.
Designate a Fiscal Officer at your organization.
The Fiscal Officer cannot be you or your co-facilitator.
Submit the online application form.
You will need to complete the application in one sitting. You will not be able to save your work in progress. To complete the application, you will need to answer the following questions:
- Why are you interested in hosting a Reading & Discussion Program? What benefit do you think this program will have for your community? (100 word limit)
- What theme or themes will be addressed by your R&D Program? (100 word limit)
- Why have you selected this particular theme or themes? (100 word limit)
- How many sessions do you plan to have?
- Briefly describe how you plan to structure or what you plan to address at each session. (100 word limit)
- Describe the audience you plan to reach with this program. (100 word limit)
- Please include any additional information that should be considered with your application. (200 word limit)
Applications are due November 15 for programs taking place the following calendar year. You will be notified of the Council’s decision by December 15. Please note that program support is not guaranteed. Funds may not be available to fulfill all requests.
